How to add the it.* hierarchy to a news server.

This document contains the most important things related to adding the it.*
news hierarchy to a news server or just configuring the server to carry it
properly if it.* groups are already there. It is intended mainly for news
system administrators.

.. Who administers the it.* hierarchy?

The group in charge of the administration of it.* (GCN, Gruppo
Coordinamento NEWS-IT, NEWS-IT Steering Group) can be reached through
the address gcn@news.nic.it .

.. Getting a feed

If you can't obtain a feed from one of your usual feeder write us.
We will find a peer near your site or will arrange a direct feed from
an Italian news server.

.. Automatic newsgroups creation

Before August 2001 control messages were sent by Stefano Suin
<stefano@unipi.it> and signed with PGP key 0x185317B9 (user ID
it.announce.newgroups). Please remove any reference to this address
and key, because soon we will start sending bogus rmgroup messages
signed by it to encourage everybody to update their configurations.

Control messages are sent by the administrative account gcn@news.nic.it
with the PGP key 0xB28B9B51 (user ID gcn@news.nic.it).
You can download it from http://www.news.nic.it/pgp.txt .
If you use INN you can add those lines to your control.ctl file:

checkgroups:gcn@news.nic.it:it.*:verify-gcn@news.nic.it
newgroup:gcn@news.nic.it:it.*:verify-gcn@news.nic.it
rmgroup:gcn@news.nic.it:it.*:verify-gcn@news.nic.it

If you don't use pgpcontrol you may add those lines instead:

checkgroups:gcn@news.nic.it:it.*:doit=checkgroups
newgroup:gcn@news.nic.it:it.*:doit=newgroup
rmgroup:gcn@news.nic.it:it.*:doit=rmgroup

A checkgroups control message for it.* is posted at the end of every
month and can be downloaded from http://www.news.nic.it/checkgroups.txt

.. Moderators file

All postings to moderated groups within it.* should be sent to the address
it-group-name@moderators.news.nic.it . If you use INN you can add this
line to the beginning of your moderators file:

it.*:%s@moderators.news.nic.it

The %s@moderators.isc.org standard addresses will work as well.

.. Suggested expiration periods for announce groups

FAQ and GCN related groups should be retained for at least one month.
All periodic postings have a Supersedes: header so those groups can be
retained for longer periods if desired.
